Transcription Notes:

This Internet file is not an exact copy of the book. Certain liberties have been taken. It is presented here as a collection of poetry, rather than as songs to be sung. Some of the conventions helpful for singing, such as breaking words into syllables and heavy use of apostrophes for elided 'e's and 'v's, were felt unnecessary and distracting, so many of the 'v's and practically all of the vowels that were apostrophized out have been replaced. While choruses are noted, repeating line have otherwise been left out. A very few spellings have been modernized, and typographic errors corrected.

The following are excerpts only from this songbook, which included many songs with no specifically Masonic content: traditional church hymns, chants, popular ballads, and so forth. Of the 116 songs and instrumental pieces, 24 are included here; they can be identified by the hyperlinks in the Table of Contents.

If a more precise rendition is required, a photocopy of the book is available online at Google Books: Page 4 was an imprimateur from the MWGM of New York, page 5 is the title page; be forewarned, because of confusion between song numbering and page numbering, the page numbering is messed up in the Google Books file.

This book did not include any artwork. There were many music scores, including sections of instrumental pieces without lyrics. An indexes of first lines of only those songs included in this selection has been compiled at the end of this file.

4. Come Craftsmen Assembled Our Pleasures To Share.

Opening; Portugese Hymn

Come Craftsmen assembled our pleasures to share,
Who walk by the plumb, and who work by the square
While traveling in Love on the level of time,
Sweet hope shall light on to a far better clime.

Almighty Jehovah descend now and fill
This Lodge with Thy glory, our hearts with good will,
Preside at our meeting, assist us to find
True pleasure in teaching good will to mankind.

5. Farewell, Till Again.

Closing; Portugese Hymn

Farewell, till again we welcome the time,
Which brings us once more to our Heaven born shrine,
Again may we meet in this our sacred home,
May every Mason in Heaven find a home

6. Come Brothers Of The Plumb And Square.

Opening; Mason

Come, brothers of the plumb and square,
Come join in cheerful song;
Let every heart and voice prepare,
The glad notes to prolong.
We're brothers, by a mystic tie,
We're brothers true and free,
Then let the song ascend on high,
God speed Free Masonry.

In love we meet, in peace we part,
We walk by plummet's line;
While friendship dwells within each heart
That owns the craft Divine.
'Midst all the toils and cares of earth,
We steady keep our way,
With Faith and Hope we wait the birth
Of an eternal day.

7. We Met In Love.

Closing; Mason

We met in love, we part in peace,
Our lodge's labor o'er;
We'll pray ere life's best days shall cease,
To meet in time once more.
'Mid fairest scenes to memory dear,
In change of joy or pain;
We'll think of friends assembled here,
And hope to meet again.

8. Within Our Temple Met Again.

Opening; Arlington

Within our temple met again,
With hearts and purpose strong,
We'll raise our notes with grateful praise,
With union in our song.

Around our altars sacred shrine,
May love's pure incense rise,
Bearing upon its mystic flame,
Our music to the skies.

9. Come, Brothers, Ere Tonight We Part.

Closing; Arlington

Come, brothers, ere tonight we part,
Join every voice and heart;
Our solemn hymn to God we raise
Our closing song of praise.

Here, brothers, we may meet no more;
But there's a happier shore;
And there released from toil and pain
We hope to meet again.

10. Blest Be The Tie That Binds.

Opening; Dennis

Blest be the tie that binds,
Our hearts in purest love,
The fellowship of kindred minds
Is like to that above.

Before our Father's throne,
We pour united prayers;
Our fears, our hopes, our aims are one
Our comforts and our cares.

11. Let Songs Of Endless Praise.

Closing; Dennis

Let songs of endless praise,
From every heart arise;
Let all our brothers tribute raise
To God who rules the skies.

His mercy and His love
Are as His name Divine
And all Eternity, shall prove
His Light shall ever shine.

13. Good Night! Farewell.

Closing; Kinkel

Good night, my brothers all,
The parting hour has come,
May God in his great mercy
Protect our cherished home.
Good night, farewell! my brothers true,
Farewell! God bless each one of you.

Never more may I behold thee,
Or this glad heart may greet thee,
But then whatever befalls me,
My prayer to God is for thee.
Good night, farewell! my brothers true,
Farewell! God bless each one of you.

14. The Level And The Square.

Closing; Millard

We meet upon the Level,
And we part upon the Square;
What words of precious meaning
Those words Masonic are
Come let us contemplate them,
They are worthy of our thought,
With the highest and the holiest,
And the rarest they are fraught.

Let us meet upon the level then,
While laboring patient here,
Let us meet and let us labor
Though it be severe,
Already in the western sky
the signs bid us prepare
To gather up our working tools
and part upon the square.

15. From East To West O'er Land And Sea.

Closing; Dykes

From East to West o'er land and sea,
Where brothers meet and friends agree;
Let incense rise from hearts sincere,
The dearest offering gathered here.

Our trust reposed on Him alone,
Who ne'er will contrite hearts disown,
Our Faith shall mark that Holy Light,
Whose beams our highest joys unite.

22. Brothers, Now Behold.

Entered Apprentice; Dykes

Brothers now behold a stranger here,
Knocking at our outer door.
May his trust in God know no fear,
But sustain him with its power.

Mighty Father God of Truth and Love,
Help him in this solemn hour,
Ever looking upward and above,
Constant blessing on him shower.

25. Far From The World's Cold Strife And Pride.

Entered Apprentice; Hamburg

Far from the worlds cold strife and pride,
Come join our peaceful happy band;
Come stranger we your feet will guide,
where Truth and Love shall hold command.

Although in untried paths you tread,
And filled perhaps with anxious fear;
A Brother's faithful hand shall lead,
Where doubt and darkness disappear.

44. Deign Thou This Covenant.

Fellow Craft; Hopkins

Deign thou this covenant to approve
And confirm it, God of Truth and Love;
Send Thou Thy richest gifts upon his head;
Forever be the oil of gladness shed.

In life's vicissitudes be near
To keep him in Thy holy love and fear;
In life, in death, O aid him by thy might;
Lead him , O Lord, by Thy most gracious Light.

45. O Welcome, Brother, To Our Band.

Fellow Craft; Auld Lang Syne

O welcome, brother, to our band,
Though strong its numbers now
And high its lofty pillars stand,
And noble arches bow.
O welcome if thy heart heart be true,
Thou'lt find with us a home,
We're daly adding numbers now,
Under our glorious dome.

Now let our soulful prayer arise,
For blessings on his brow
And bear our offerings to the skies,
For him who joins us now.
O welcome, free thy heart from fear,
Thou'lt find with us a home,
We're daily adding columns here,
Within our glorious dome,

60. Master Supreme Accept Our Praise.

Consecration; Old Hundred

Master Supreme accept our praise;
Still bless this consecrated band;
Father of Light! illume our ways,
And guide us by Thy mighty hand.

May Faith, and Hope and Love divine,
Here hold their undivided reign;
Friendship and Harmony combine;
To soothe our cares and banish pain.

May Pity dwell within each breast,
Relief attend the suffering poor;
Thus many by our Lodge be blest,
Till we in Heaven with Thee shall rest.

When death shall close our earthy songs,
And seal in silence mortal tongues,
O Thou, in whom we put our trust,
Receive us to Thyself at last.

61. O With Due Reverence.

Constituting Lodge; Old Hundred

O with due reverence let us all,
To this our temple now repair;
And prostrate at God's foot stool fall,
To breathe to Him our fervent prayer.

Arise, O Lord, and now possess,
This Lodge and with us ever rest;
Shine Thou upon each brother here,
And bring us to Thy presence blest.

66. Dangers Of Every Form Attend.

Master Mason; Hebron

Dangers of every form attend
Your steps, as onward you proceed;
No earthly power can now befriend,
Or aid you in this time of need.

Confide your trust in Him alone,
Who rules all things above, below.
Send your petitions to His throne,
For He alone can aid you now.

82. Solemn Strikes The Funeral Chime.

Master Mason; Pleyel

Solemn strikes the funeral chime,
Notes of our departing time,
As we journey here below,
Through a pilgrimage of woe.

Mortals now indulge a tear
For mortality is here
See how wide her trophies wave,
O'er the slumber of the grave.

Here another guest we bring,
Seraphs of celestial wing.
To our funeral alter come,
Waft our friend and Brother home.

Lord of all below, above,
Fill our souls with Truth and Love;
As dissolves our earthly tie,
Take us to Thy Lodge on high.

85. Asleep! O Brother, Blessed Sleep.

Funeral; Bradbury

Asleep! O brother, blessed sleep!
From which none ever wakes to weep.
A calm and undisturbed repose,
Unbroken by the last of foes.

Asleep! my brother, peaceful rest,
Whose waking is supremly blest.
No fear, no woe shall dim the hour,
That manifests the Fathers power.

90. Thou Who Art God Alone.

Dedication; Italian Hymn

Thou Who art God alone,
Accept, before Thy throne,
Our fervent prayer.
To fill with light and grace,
This house, Thy dwelling place,
And bless the human race,
O God, draw near.

Spirit of truth and love,
Desending from above,
Our hearts inflame.
Till Masonry's control,
Shall build from pole to pole,
A temple of the Soul,
To Thy great name.

91. As Days And Years.

Anniversary; Denby

As days and years roll silent by,
As time's sad changes rise,
No doubt shall dim the trusting eye,
For He Who rules is wise,

Come, brothers, bound by kindly ties,
Your notes harmonious bring,
On this our Anniversary,
Glad thanks and praise we sing.

To Him who rules, be homage paid,
Where hearts with voice unite,
Till life shall cease and time shall fade,
We'll bring our solemn plight.

92. Behold In The East.

Installation; Portugese Hymn

Behold! in the East, our new master appears;
Come, brothers, we'll greet him with hearts all sincere;
We'll serve him with freedom, with fervor and zeal,
And aid him his duties and trust to fulfill.

In the West see the Warden, with level in hand,
The Master to aid and obey his command.
We'll aid him with freedom, with fervor and zeal,
And help him his duties and trust to fulfill.

In the South, see the Warden by Plumb stand upright,
Who watches the sun, and takes note of his flight,
We'll aid him with freedom, with fervor and zeal,
And help him his duties and trust to fulfill.

93. Placed In Form.

Laying Corner Stone; Marsh

Placed in form, the corner stone,
True and trusty brothers own,
Marked with love the Master's will,
Kindly proved the work of skill.
Beautious forms in grace shall rise,
'Neath the arch of favoring skies,
Come and bring in thought sincere,
Hands to help and hearts to cheer.

Join we now our offering true,
While our homage we renew;
Bear to Him whose praise we sing,
Thanks that from each bosom spring.
When on earth our work is o'er,
Be a better life in store,
Each in form, in heart upright,
Rest in God's most gracious light.
